A report on Monday claims a man with gastrointestinal issues and a high fever checked in to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York city to be tested for Ebola.  

The unnamed man recently returned from a West African country where the virus has already spread.

The patient has been placed in isolation, according to the hospital reports WABC 7.

"All necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of all patients, visitors and staff," the hospital wrote in a statement. "We will continue to work closely with federal, state and city health officials to address and monitor this case, keep the community informed and provide the best quality care to all of our patients."

So far, the Ebola virus has killed nearly 900 people.

Airports are on the look-out for flu-like symptoms in travelers from Africa. Anyone suspected to be ill will be placed in quarantine and evaluated.

A spokeswoman for the Center for Disease Control, Barbara Reynolds, explained that "there is always the possibility that someone with an infectious disease can enter the United States." "The public health concern is whether it would spread, and, if so, how quickly," she added.
