The USWNT made history with an all-Black frontline. Here are some facts about each player before they compete for gold on Saturday.

After Sophia Smith's dramatic 95th-minute goal in the women's semifinal against Germany on Tuesday, August 6, the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team (USWNT) secured their spot in the gold medal match at the Paris 2024 Olympics. This upcoming showdown against Brazil on Saturday, August 11, will be the first time the USWNT has competed for Olympic gold since the 2012 London Games.

A historic moment for the team, the USWNT is fielding an all-Black frontline featuring Jaedyn Shaw, Crystal Dunn, Trinity Rodman, Mallory Pugh Swanson, and Smith. Ahead of this monumental game, we're shining a spotlight on these incredible athletes. Here are five key facts about each of these trailblazing Black women on the team.

  • Naomi Girma

    Naomi Girma is a standout defender for San Diego Wave FC in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). Making her Olympic debut at the Paris 2024 Games, Girma has quickly become a key player on the international stage. Born in San Jose, California, to Ethiopian immigrants, she was introduced to soccer through the Maleda Soccer Club, a local club her father, a sports enthusiast, founded for the Bay Area Ethiopian community in 2005. In addition to soccer, Girma also played basketball and gymnastics during her childhood. Selected as the first overall pick in the 2022 NWSL Draft, Girma made an immediate impact, earning both NWSL Rookie of the Year and Defender of the Year honors in her debut season.

  • Casey Krueger

    Casey Krueger is a skilled defender for the Washington Spirit in the NWSL, with a diverse playing background that includes stints with Norwegian club Avaldsnes IL and the Chicago Red Stars. Born and raised in Naperville, Illinois, Krueger honed her skills early, leading her hometown to four Illinois State Cup championships. She was the fifth overall pick in the 2013 NWSL Draft, marking the beginning of a successful professional career. On the international stage, Krueger has made her mark as well, playing in the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup and earning a spot on the senior national team roster for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

    Crystal Dunn, a versatile player for Gotham FC, excels in multiple positions, including forward, midfield, and defense. Her impressive career began with a standout performance as part of the U.S. team that won the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Japan. In 2014, Dunn was selected first overall by the Washington Spirit in the NWSL Draft. The following year, she made history by becoming the youngest player at age 23 to win both the NWSL Most Valuable Player and Golden Boot awards. Born and raised in New York, Dunn has continually showcased her remarkable talent on the field.

    Jaedyn Shaw is a forward for San Diego Wave FC, known for her dynamic play on the field. She represented the U.S. at the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica, making her mark by appearing in all three matches. Shaw’s outstanding performance that year earned her the U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year award, as well as a spot on the Best XI at the 2022 Sud Ladies Cup. Born in Frisco, Texas, Shaw has quickly risen as a standout talent in American soccer.

  • Sophia Smith

    Sophia Smith is a forward for Portland Thorns FC and was the first overall pick in the 2020 NWSL College Draft. Raised in an athletic family in Windsor, Colorado, Smith's father played basketball at the University of Wyoming, and her older sister, Savannah, became the all-time leading scorer at the University of Northern Colorado. Notably, Smith is the first player born in the 2000s to play for the USWNT. Her exceptional talent was recognized in 2022 when she was named NWSL Most Valuable Player and U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year. The following year, she claimed the NWSL Golden Boot for scoring the most goals in the season.

  • Trinity Rodman

    Trinity Rodman is a forward for the Washington Spirit and the daughter of NBA legend Dennis Rodman. At just 18 years old, she made history as the youngest player ever drafted in the NWSL when she was selected second overall in the 2021 NWSL Draft. In her debut season, Rodman quickly established herself as a rising star by helping her team win the NWSL Championship, earning NWSL Rookie of the Year honors, and being named to the NWSL Best XI. She also capped off her remarkable year by being named U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year. Born in Newport Beach, California, Rodman has quickly become one of the most exciting talents in women's soccer.

    Mallory Swanson is a forward for the Chicago Red Stars and has been a standout player for the USWNT since her debut in 2016. At just 17 years old, she became the youngest player to join the team since Heather O'Reilly in 2002. Swanson's impact was immediate; she represented the U.S. at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where she became the youngest American to score an Olympic goal. In 2019, she further solidified her place in history by winning the FIFA Women's World Cup with the national team. Born in Littleton, Colorado, Swanson comes from an athletic family—her mother was a long-distance runner, and her father competed in track and football. 

  • Lynn Williams

    Lynn Williams is a forward for NJ/NY Gotham FC, known for her speed and scoring ability. Drafted by the Western New York Flash out of Pepperdine University in 2015, Williams quickly made a name for herself, earning NWSL Most Valuable Player honors and helping the Flash win the NWSL Championship in 2016. After being traded to the Kansas City Current in 2022, she joined Gotham FC in 2023, where she won her fourth NWSL Championship. Born in Fresno, California, Williams has become one of the league's most consistent and impactful players.
