Tevin Campbell Wows New York City
We've all heard our favorite singers from back in the day take the mic twenty years later and said, "They can't do it like they used to!" This wasn't the case for R&B veteran Tevin Campbell, who hit all the right notes at B.B. Kings in Manhattan on Saturday night.
Although he was looking notably thin, the five-time Grammy nominee did a great job shooting down the rumors that he had lost his voice. Despite gossip of drug abuse, homelessness and all types of shenanigans the web can concoct, Campbell effortlessly belted out the hits, saying, "Ya'll got to make me sing all that high stuff when I was 15!"
The first half of the show started slow, with Campbell doing his less popular tunes. But when he finally got to "I'm Ready" and "Brown Eyed Girl," which he played live on the piano for the first time, the show found its soul. The best moment of the night was a stripped down version of "Tell Me What You Want You Me to Do" from 1991. He brought the audience to a frenzy with the veins popping out of his neck, channeling his Texas church roots but not over-killing the riffs.
Campbell also announced new music, which will include production from Teddy Riley and Faith Evans. One of the new songs, "Addicted to Your Love," had more of a hip hop vibe — but let's hope he stays true to his power ballad roots. "Always in My Heart" and "Can We Talk" had the crowd singing along, but Campbell dropped the mic for the encore, singing two of his classics written by Prince, "Round and Round" and "Shhh."
One can only hope Campbell gets the resurgence he deserves. The talent is still there and he is arguably an even better singer than he was over 20 years ago — not many artists can say that.
