See the Backlash CoverGirl is Receiving Following First Cover Boy James Charles' Disgustingly Racist Tweet
Back in October 2016, CoverGirl made history by enlisting their first-ever 'Cover Boy' for the brand, a 17-year-old from upstate New York.
James Charles is a high school senior who has amassed a huge following in the past year or so, going on to catch the eye of the reputed makeup brand and being offered the gig of a lifetime. While he has made the company proud so far by breaking gender barriors regarding cosmetics use, a recent tweet has many questioning CoverGirl's latest hire.
Taking to Twitter, James Charles posted an insensitive tweet, making a racially motivated "joke" that he was afraid to travel to Africa because he fears he will get Ebola.
"'I can't believe we're going to Africa today omg what if we get Ebola?' 'James we're fine we could've gotten it at chipotle last year,'" the now-deleted tweet reads.
Unfortunately, the representative of CoverGirl didn't delete his tweet in time, with many expressing their outrage at his stereotypical and overall degrading comment and pointing out his comment also is ignorant considering Ebola hasn't been an issue throughout the continent since last year.
James Charles has since taken responsibility for the problematic statement and has issued a lengthy apology, but according to users on Twitter, the damage has already been done.
CoverGirl has issued a statement of apology as well, claiming that his tweet "does not represent COVERGIRL's perspective," while also adding, "We agree his statements were inappropriate but appreciate that he has issued an apology." The company also reminded its supporters that they "are an inclusive brand and respect all people and cultures."
Take a look at James Charles' offensive tweet and apology, as well as how Twitter is reacting, below.
