Sloane Stephens Comes Out Victorious Against Venus Williams In The U.S. Open Semifinals
Rising tennis star Sloane Stephens just secured her first trip to the U.S. Open Finals after defeating seven-time Grand Slam champ, Venus Williams.
Her success on the court seems like something straight out of a fairytale. Back in January, she had foot surgery to repair a stress fracture.
Once she got back on the court, she was defeated at Wimbledon in July and was ranked number 957 at the beginning of August. 33 days later, she’s currently ranked 83rd and is expected to hit 22 by the finals.
Stephens dominated the first set before being dominated by Williams in the second. Ultimately, she came out victorious with a final score of 6-1, 0-6, 7-5.
Graciously acknowledging her opponent, Stephens said, “I’m honestly just honored to be able to play at the same time as her. She’s one of the most graceful,... anything nice, everything nice to say about Venus. She’s one of the greatest competitors. I’m honored that I’ve been able to play at the same time as her,” in a press conferencefollowing her huge win.
Sloane Stephens will be taking on either Madison Keys or CoCo Vandeweghe in the US Finals on Saturday. According to Yahoo Sports, this is the first time since 1998 that an American woman, besides Venus and Serena Williams, will come out victorious at the US open.
