Miguel recently dropped the visuals for his new single, “Now,’ and it has a very important message. In the video, which is off his newly-released album, the soul singer visits an immigration confinement center and shines light on some of the horrific experiences many of them endure.

The four-minute video opens with a shot of the sign for the City of Adelanto, California before cutting to an image of the High Desert Detention Center. According to the video, Adelanto is the “home to the largest immigrant prison in California, housing 2,000 family members predominantly from Mexico, Haiti, and Central America.”

The video then cuts to various scenes around the detention center, as a voice over discusses the problem with the nation’s immigration laws. 

As Miguel sings for freedom, the video flips through clips from when the singer visited and protested the detention center. Miguel reportedly went to Adelanto back in Oct. 2017, and had conversations with several immigrants affected by harsh immigration policies, as shown in the video. “This whole system is built on isolation,” one woman says. “We have to do our best to shine a light on it and build a community and build power together.”

“Now” is the last track off of Miguel’s latest album, War & Leisure. The single is undoubtedly his most politically-charged track yet. In addition to promoting immigration reform, the singer also shades Donald Trump and his racist decisions.
