Here's What Happens When You Play Kendrick Lamar's 'DAMN.' Album Backward

Mind blown.

The platinum status of Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN., reached in under a month, proved to everyone just how much praise and play the magnum opus received from TDE enthusiasts everywhere.

But even for the most devout K-Dot fans, knowing this project backward and forward has just taken on an entire new meaning after he revealed an alternative listening experience.

According to Kendrick’s latest MTV News interview, the album is actually playable in reverse order, starting with the 14th track, “DUCKWORTH.,” and ending with the first, “BLOOD.” This may be news to some fans, but apparently not for one in particular who proposed a theory shortly after the album’s release that K-Dot would drop another album. The philosophy wasn’t exactly spot-on, but the fan did have the right idea going about the two albums in one concept.

“I think like a week after the album came out, [fans] realized you can play the album backwards,” Kendrick said. “It plays as a full story and even a better rhythm. It’s one of my favorite rhythms and tempos within the album. It’s something that we definitely premeditate while we’re in the studio.”

Besides a shift in the album’s sound ambience and mood, Kendrick explained that the narrative of the album stays solid. The “aggression” and “attitude” adopted early in the project with tracks like “DNA.” unveil a different side of K-Dot when moved to the end of the album.

“You listen from the back end, and it’s almost the duality and the contrast of the intricate Kendrick Lamar,” he said of the backward listening. “Both of these pieces are who I am.”

Sheesh—let’s see who can top this one in 2017.
