Debra Lee Replaces Offensive Music Videos With Positive Original Content
In an interview with FOX News, BET Networks CEO and Chairman Debra Lee talked about measures she has taken to ensure that the quality of the network's content continues to improve. "We’ve gotten more strict on what we allow on air," said Lee. "Just because it can be on the air doesn’t mean it has to be on the air.”
One area where Lee has taken action is music videos with offensive imagery. “I started to say no to a lot of artists," she explained. "Someone had to be the grownup in the room. I didn’t ask for that job, but I just had to start saying no and looking at it from our young audience’s perspective.”
BET continues to develop more original content and, as a consequence, has downsized the number of potentially controversial videos. "I think the criticism has gone away," says Lee.
Artists whose videos have been declined include Kanye West, Ciara and Rihanna.
