Box Office: Hot Pursuit Can't Keep Up With Avengers
Avengers: Age of Ultron trampled over all other titles at the box office this weekend, taking the top spot by a long shot with another $77.1 million. The Robert Downey, Jr.-starrer hit the $300 million mark domestically in only 10 days, while its world total is at a whopping $875.3 million. The film has yet to open in China and Japan, meaning crossing the $1 billion mark is certainly within reach.
Coming in a very distant second was Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara's new comedy Hot Pursuit, which opened to $13.3 million. Those numbers are dismal considering the film was expected to appeal to a female-driven Mother's Day crowd, but clearly moms and their families had better things to do.
Third place went to Blake Lively's new film Age of Adaline, which made an additional $5.6 million in its third weekend. Rounding out the top five are Vin Diesel and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in Furious 7 and Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, which brought in $5.2 million and $5.1 million, respectively.
Next week, Mad Max: Fury Road and Pitch Perfect 2 will challenge Age of Ultron's box office reign.
