Denzel Washington On Why He Doesn’t Call Himself a ‘Hollywood Actor’

The two-time Academy Award winner began in theater before making it big in film.

Denzel Washington might be a movie legend, but the 70-year-old doesn’t consider himself a ‘Hollywood actor.’

Washington plays the titular role in Broadway play “Othello” and discussed the show alongside co-star Jake Gyllenhaal in a new episode of “60 Minutes,” seen below. While Washington has won two Academy Awards throughout his career, spanning five decades, the actor told “60 Minutes” correspondent Bill Whitaker that he doesn’t fit the “Hollywood actor” standard.

“What’s the definition of a Hollywood actor?” Washington asked Whitaker around the 1:45-minute mark of the video below. “Myself, I’m from Mt. Vernon, so I’m a ‘Mt. Vernon actor.’ I don’t know what ‘Hollywood’ means.”

“I’m a stage actor who does film; it’s not the other way around,” Washington continued. “I did stage first. I learned how to act on stage, not on film.”

“Movies are a filmmaker’s medium. You shoot it, and then you’re gone and they cut together and add music and do all of that. Theater is an actor’s medium. The curtain goes up, and you’re on. Nobody can help you.

“The stakes are the highest,” Gyllenhaal added.

Among Washington’s early stage roles were in off-Broadway productions of “Coriolanus” in 1979 and his first portrayal of Malcolm X in “When the Chickens Came Home to Roost” in 1981. In the same year, Washington would make his film debut in comedy-drama “Carbon Copy.”

The veteran actor last starred in “Gladiator II” and will next lead his fifth Spike Lee-directed film, “Highest 2 Lowest.”

Across eight “Othello” performances, the play has reportedly grossed $2.8 million, according to “The Hollywood Reporter.” The limited engagement will continue at the Barrymore Theatre until June 8.
