It was a night filled with stars at Club Nokia in Downtown Los Angeles as more than 1,500 people came out to celebrate the start of Nokia Music as part of Social Media Week.
Big Boi, best known as half of the legendary rap duo Outkast stopped by to tell BET.com what fans should expect from his latest solo album, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, which is slated for release on November 13th.
"The first single, 'Mama Told Me' should be out next week," said Big Boi. "It's 12-14 tracks, everything is exquisite and y'all are gonna love it!"
Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors is Big Boi's second solo effort (third if you count Outkast's 2003 release Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, which was a double-disc featuring a solo album from each member) and will feature a much more versatile list of guest appearances than 2010's funk masterpiece, Sir Lucious Leftfoot: Son of Chico Dusty.
"I've been spotting and cultivating talent for years," noted the MC, referring to his collaborators on this album, which include Little Dragon, Modest Mouse and indie-pop duo Phantogram.
In addition to handling his rhyming duties, Daddy Fat Saxx also produced some of the tracks for the album along with venerable hip hop producer Chris Carmouche. "I've been producing ever since (1995's) ATLiens, me and Dre (with Organized Noize), so it's just another day at the office for me, but with this album it's going to be extra action packed. So, stay tuned!"
After doing his thing on the red carpet, Big Boi hit the stage to perform some of his hits like "Shutterbug" and "The Way You Move" as well as a few classics from his Outkast days like "Rosa Parks" and "So Fresh and So Clean."
The evening's main event was genre-bending sensation Janelle Monáe, who came out around 9:30 to a packed house that included celebrities like Liberty Ross, Tyler James Williams (from NBC's new hit show Go On) and BET Music Matters artist Luke James, to name a few.
Complimenting Monáe's undeniable raw vocal talent was the soulful singer's flair for theatrics. Her stage show — which was no doubt inspired by Prince — featured a 9-piece band, multiple wardrobe changes and meticulously detailed choreography.
Monae had the crowd on their feet from start to finish, performing some of her hit songs like "Tightrope" featuring  Big Boi and "57821" as well as a cover of The Jackson 5's "One More Chance," which had the stiffs that usually occupy V.I.P. on their feet.
Social Media Week isn't over but so far Nokia Music definitely stole the show.
