Tamia Talks About 'Love Life,' Being a Basketball Wife and Adapting to Today's Sound

The Grammy nominee's sixth studio album is releasing in June.

Tamia was the special guest on The Breakfast Club with DJ Envy, Angela Yee and Charlamagne Tha God, and she opened up about her upcoming LP Love Life, being an original basketball wife (she’s happily married to Grant Hill), her fight against multiple sclerosis, adapting her sound to what's hot now and more.

2012’s Beautiful Surprise marked the last time she released an album independently. For Love Life, she has returned to the major label ranks, releasing her sixth studio album through Def Jam. “To me [labels], you kind of have to use them like a rich uncle,” she said. “But they've been really awesome, and have let me just do my thing. The album is about loving life and about love lives. There are a lot of songs that are love songs, but it's just a happy album. It's not as deep and dark as some of my past albums; it's in a better place.”

Tamia also touched on multiple sclerosis, saying that she’s feeling a lot better since she was diagnosed in 2013. “I was promoting 'Missing You' and I was really tired, which we all are, so it wasn't a bug symptom for me. But I noticed I was really sensitive to heat,” she said. “I would neurologically lose my ability to write, so that's when I knew something was really wrong. I actually don't have too much pain, so I do a lot of homeopathical things and different therapies. I've been really good.”

Although it’s been three years since her last album, Tamia is not concerned about adapting her sound to 2015’s standards. Love Life will have collaborations from hitmakers Pop & OakThe-Dream and Tricky Stewart. “I think that’s kinda how artists fall in a trap. You have to stay true to who you are as a sound and you can kind of vocally adapt, but you should never change who you are.”
