Travel Tuesday: Top Destinations For An Unforgettable Guys' Getaway
Move over, ladies: It's time for a boy's trip! Yes, we love to travel with our girlfriends, but men want their turn too. All male getaways allow Black men to become closer, see the world, and have a healing experience. David Rose, a Black travel influencer, knows how healing it is to see the world. "I am not looking to visit many countries, but more focused on high-quality authentic experiences everywhere I go," said Rose, who openly shares his experiences on his Instagram.
Here are his top recommendations for your next boys' trip!
Cartagena, Columbia
"Columbia is a culturally vibrant city that has everything you need." David explained, "It has great beaches, restaurants, bars, and nightlife." Columbia is known for its diverse, vibrant culture, allowing rich food options and lively dance culture. David believes Columbia's vibrant culture is the perfect opportunity for traveling with friends. "The people are friendly, and there are many opportunities for large groups to have a good time."
Rose said natural mud baths at Volcan De Lodo El Totumo to visiting the pink sea are great options. However, his most exciting recommendation includes a taste of history. He said, "Take the time to visit San Basilio De Palenque, a beautiful African town with a rich history."
Accra, Ghana
When I think of Ghana, I think of a vibrant community immersed in the deep history of the land. But Rose also pointed out that it is a great place to party. "The party does not end in this city, and you can expect to party from sun up to sun down." Accra may be great for party groups; however, if your guy friends aren't into that sort of thing, Rose suggests a more chill boys' trip. "The Cape Coast is a much slower pace, where most of the significant slave castles are and beautiful beaches. I highly recommend staying here," he said.
Furthermore, planning a trip to Ghana can be pricey at times. Rose says it is the most expensive around Christmas and New Year's Eve when everyone goes to Accra for parties.
Costa Rica
I once went on a trip to Costa Rica with my girlfriends, and it was a healing experience and can also be that for men. "Many people come to Costa Rica for mindfulness retreats and other activities to rest and relax." Costa Rica has so much to offer for Black men trying to heal. Check out this Costa Rica retreat for Black men run by Michael Ruth, a Navy veteran turned Yoga Instructor.
You can also go on amazing hikes. "San Jose is a main city with great restaurants but also great hiking and a volcano," said Rose. Plus, the Central American country can be a luxury or budget trip! "There are many luxury boutique hotels and resorts along the Pacific coast. However, you can also find affordable stays and tons of Airbnb with great views."
Tulum Mexico
On his Instagram page, Rose shared the connection between Cinco De Mayo and Black history month, "Beautiful Black people, I want y'all to celebrate this day knowing if Mexicans did not defeat the French in the battle of Puebla, the French would've given the confederates an advantage, and we would probably all be slaves right now." His trip allowed him to take a deep dive into Mexican Culture. "There is a different city and vibe for everyone to enjoy. Isla Mujeres is a great option for the more relaxed groups, while Tulum is more party-focused." He continues, "Tulum has fun bars, great restaurants, and tons of Airbnbs close to the beach."
Egypt
Egypt is a bucket list for many; luckily, Rose has dropped some gems on what it's like, which sounds fantastic. "Egypt is rich and culture and has tons of history; it's a great intro if you've never been to Africa." As someone who has yet been to Africa, I was eager to hear Rose's recommendations, and he did not disappoint. "There's tons to do in Egypt! Visit a hammam for a unique spa experience, visit the Pyramid of Gyzia, the temples of Luxor, or even a hot air balloon ride."
Need a place to stay? He recommends staying in Cairo or Hurghada, both beautiful and unique. "Cairo hotels are about an hour from the airport next to the Pyramids, and Hurghada is a popular beach resort. Hurghada is perfect when you want to relax."
