Did You Know 'The Fresh Prince' Was Going To Be For De La Soul?!
The iconic hip-hop group De La Soul is back on our airwaves and headphones like the good Lord intended with a new Apple Music show called Art Official Intelligence Radio that debuted on March 5 on Apple Music 1. In this limited five-episode series, surviving members of De La Soul and childhood friends Kelvin “Posdnuos” Mercer and Vincent “Maseo” Mason Jr. intend to honor the 35th anniversary of their debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising while also sitting with fellow legends, sharing stories many hip hop heads have never even heard.
That’s exactly what De La Soul did with their first episode featuring the one and only Queen Latifah. They revealed a shocking truth that the TV sitcom made popular by Will Smith, “The Fresh Prince,” was offered to them first! “A lot of people don’t know, yo, the Fresh Prince thing was offered to us,” Posdnuos said. He continued, “They want us to do this? Russell [Simmons] was like, ‘Yo, y’all need to try out. Go out there.’ We was like, ‘Nah. We do rap and stuff.’ Honestly, we were scared. Seriously, we were scared. And sh*t, I could have been Will Smith. I could have got married to Jada. Damn.”
The Queen agreed but comforted Posdnuos and Maseo by saying, “You definitely could have. But I think you're good where you are right now. I think you're good.”
Nostalgia can be such a delicious experience. Watching these legends love up on each other and share memories from the time when their careers were virtually taking off is heart-warming. Queen Latifah compared seeing Posdnuos and Maseo to little excited puppies sniffing each other, wondering where each other has been.
With guests like Common, Questlove, Rapsody, Pharaoh Monch and more, De La Soul’s Art Official Intelligence Radio can’t be missed! Tune in on Apple Music 1!
