Box Office: Taken 3 , Selma Top the Box Office
Taken 3 took the top spot at this weekend’s box office with a whopping $40.4 million debut. The action flick, starring Liam Neeson and Forest Whitaker, scored the second-best January opening of all time (the first place spot still belongs to last year's Ride Along, starring Ice Cubeand Kevin Hart). Taken 3 managed to knock The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies out of the top spot.
Coming in second was the civil rights drama Selma, starring David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King Jr., which expanded nationwide and brought in $13.5 million.
Disney’s film adaptation of the musical Into the Woods, starring Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp, took third place with $9.8 million. Rounding out the top five were The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and the Angelina Jolie-directed war film Unbroken, which brought in $9.4 million and $8.4 million, respectively.
Next week, Kevin Hart will aim to break his own record for best January debut with The Wedding Ringer. Also, Michael Mann's Blackhat, starring Chris Hemsworth and Viola Davis, also premieres.
