Family of Misrach Ewunetie Princeton Student Found Dead, Wants Independent Autopsy Over Possible Foul Play
The family of Misrach Ewunetie, the Princeton University student found dead six days after she went missing, launched a fundraiser to help cover expenses, including an independent autopsy to shed light on the “bizarre circumstances” of her death.
“Due to her sudden death and bizarre circumstances surrounding her passing, we ask family, friends, and anyone aware of her story to support her family by assisting with the expenses associated with a funeral, an independent autopsy, and significant travel,” reads the GoFundMe statement.
Ewunetie, 20, was found deceased on Oct. 20 on the Princeton facilities grounds, behind the tennis courts. In a statement on that day, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said there were “no signs of injury and her death does not appear suspicious or criminal in nature.”
Since then, an autopsy was conducted, but results from various toxicology screens could take weeks, according to The New York Post.
Meanwhile, her brother, Universe Ewunetie, casts doubt on the prosecutor’s initial findings that there was no foul play. He told the Sun that his sister’s body was discovered in an area that wasn’t easily accessible.
“The area she was found makes us feel it was suspicious, some trees had to be cut when they were removing Misrach,” he said. “Everyone thinks it's over with, and they released that statement before doing any autopsy and without telling us.”
He added that his sister, a high school valedictorian studying sociology and computer science at Princeton, had no known health problems. She was happy with her life and planning her future.
Ewunetie’s suitemates said they last saw her at 3 a.m. on the night of her disappearance near Scully Hall. Her roommate noticed she was not in her room around 4:30 a.m.
The family reported Ewunetie missing on Oct. 17, reaching out to authorities at Princeton in the morning. Later that evening, around 9:30 p.m., a “Tiger Alert” was sent out by school officials.
By Thursday (Oct. 27) morning, the GoFundMe campaign raised nearly $130,000.
