Meek Mill And Jay-Z Join Forces To Launch Joint Dream Chasers Record Label

As president, Meek has his eye on developing hip-hop's next generation of leaders.

In the year since his release from prison, Meek Mill has been on a non-stop victory lap. The rapper recently orchestrated a lucrative collaboration with sportswear retailer Lids on top of his work advocating for criminal justice reform. Now the Philly native can add another title to his resume: record label president.

  • Meek Mill has linked up with Jay-Z for a new deal that will bring Meek’s Dream Chasers Records imprint under the Roc Nation umbrella as a fully fledged record label, according to Rolling Stone. The label, which was formerly housed under Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group collective, will be headquartered in New York.

“The relationship we’ve built from (Roc Nation) believing in me through my whole career, through my ups and downs and the morals they showed to me and my team when it wasn’t in their best interest to have showed it — I feel comfortable going through this right here at home,” the Championships rapper told USA Today. “We’re ready to work. We’re just starting the beginning of a new chapter, a new page.”

  • As president over the joint venture, Meek will oversee the label and build a staff to develop new talent. Meek is also planning to have a record studio. The label will handle its own operations, talent acquisition, creative strategy and marketing.

Meek and Jay made sure to emphasize that they view this partnership as an opportunity to do something that is bigger than themselves. Their vision for the label is to make sure hip-hop’s curators have a stake in their own culture.

“Hip-hop is not just music — it’s music, it’s art, it’s fashion — so that can be applied to any silo of business,” Jay-Z told the publication. “[Music is] just one aspect of it. That’s the pipe. The overall and overarching view is for us to boss up and do things together and pull each other up and get control of the things that we produce.”

    Congratulations to both!
