St. Louis Cardinals: “The Baseball Gods Were Working in Our Favor.”
Perhaps the only people in more disbelief over the St. Louis Cardinals’ valiant World Series win over the Texas Rangers is the team itself.
"I can't believe it happened. I feel like it went so quick. I just hope in the next couple of days we'll have a chance to think about what just happened,” said Cardinals center fielder Skip Schumaker. “The baseball gods were working in our favor."
The Cardinals bested the Texas Rangers 6-2 in Game 7 on Friday night, thanks to a key hit from MVP David Freese and six gutty innings by starting pitcher Chris Carpenter. It was a win no one expected, yet became the greatest comeback story of the year. It proved a saving grace for the embattled team, who had twice been down to their final strike during the playoffs. Before Friday’s miraculous win, Thursday’s comeback in Game 6 that resulted in a 10-9 win in 11 innings showcased the team’s unwillingness to retreat.
It will likely be a long, cold winter for the Rangers, who are no strangers to second-best titles. Perhaps it will be enough time to figure out what went wrong. "We were close. Two times. Game 6. That's it," Texas pitcher Colby Lewis told The Associated Press. "Two years in a row we feel like we were the best team but we haven't won the game we needed to win."
This is the team’s 11th World Series crown. Only the New York Yankees top them, with 27 titles.
