A ‘Sistas’ Weekend Playlist Inspired by Karen
Karen’s trajectory on “Tyler Perry’s Sistas” has been anything but smooth. She started as a single, sexy, and free entrepreneur who dabbled in lots of men, including her ex, Zac, and made moves to better herself as a businesswoman. That wasn’t without drama, especially when she began going back and forth between Zac and Aaron. That ended in disaster because she ran both men away, but then she found out she was pregnant, and everything changed. She had a hard time processing being alone and pregnant and the fact that she initially wasn’t sure who the father was. Then, the man she wanted to be the father, Zac, had moved on to another woman. It’s a lot, and it caused Karen to lose some grip on reality. She developed an attitude problem and started to rage at everyone, including her girls, and especially Fatima and Zac. Let’s also not forget that her shop burned down, so getting her business back up and running was another layer to her dramatic saga.
However, it seems like things are starting to look up lately. Karen’s new salon is in business. She knows that Zac and Aaron are her twin girls’ dads, and they are in a situation that’s almost a one-in-a-million deal. Because how do twins have two fathers? Anyway, Karen at least has men who will be involved. She also made peace with Fatima and Andi and generally has a new lease on life with a better, seemingly more optimistic attitude. Here’s a playlist that encapsulates Karen’s vibe as of late.
“Baby Mama” - Brandy
Brandy’s song dedicated to hard-working mamas was partially inspired by her daughter, Sy’Rai. It’s perfect because Karen’s new attitude is probably inspired by her babies, too. Karen has a village supporting her, but she’s not going to let the less-than-ideal circumstances of her parentage bring her down.
“Baby Mama” - Fantasia
This is another perfect anthem to spread encouragement. Karen is about to have a rough road ahead raising her twins because parenting isn’t easy, let alone two babies at a time, but she got this.
“Orange Moon” - Erykah Badu
It's nice to see that Karen seems to be stepping into a new chapter with a new love for herself. She is starting to realize her worth, and that is one of the best things her babies can have: a mother who loves herself, feels loved, and, in turn, loves them too.
“I’m That Girl” - Beyonce
Karen has proven to be unstoppable. She lost her salon in a fire and learned how to bounce back quickly. It’s not easy, but Karen makes it look that way.
“Zion” - Lauryn Hill
Karen doesn’t know what’s in store regarding parenting just yet, but she’s about to find out that while it’s challenging, it can also be beautiful.
“I’m Every Woman” - Whitney Houston
The song speaks for itself. Karen is stepping into her power and feeling more comfortable with the many hats she will have to wear as a mother, businesswoman, sista friend, and maybe even eventually starting to date again.
“No More Drama” - Mary J
Karen has been a lot more mature than usual, and it shows. She’s burying hatchets, dropping baggage, and figuring out how to be peaceful and productive without all the crazy. Besides, Andi has enough drama for everyone to watch.
“I Will Survive” - Gloria Gaynor
Karen is a survivor. It’s cliche but true, and she’s learning what she is really capable of—and that’s before the babies arrive. She has many more lessons to learn, but she has a good foundation of strength and courage.
“Break My Soul” - Beyonce
Karen has been bruised, but she’s not broken.
