Usher Details Healthy ’Boundaries’ Between Him and Wife Jennifer Raymond
Usher gushed about his wife, Jennifer Raymond, née Goicoechea, on his first appearance on the podcast “Baby, This Is Keke Palmer.”
The R&B icon sat down with Palmer to discuss touring, family, and more, but around the 22-minute mark of the video below, Usher discussed how he and his third wife are a perfect match for each other. The couple shares a daughter, Sovereign Bo, 4, and a son, Sire, 3, while Usher has two sons, Usher “Cinco” Raymond V, 17, and Naviyd, 16, from his first marriage to Tameka Foster. Last February, tied to his Super Bowl LVIII halftime show performance, Usher and Jennifer married in a Las Vegas drive-thru wedding ceremony.
Jennifer is a Senior Vice President of A&R at Epic Records, overseeing talent including Mariah the Scientist, 21 Savage, and DDG.
“I definitely rely on her opinion about things. She’s an incredible sounding board and brings calm to some of my madness sometimes,” he said.
But Usher admitted that if the couple were to be professional partners, it “wouldn’t work.” Following his marriage to Foster from 2007 to 2009, Usher was married to his former branding and marketing associate, Grace Miguel, from 2015 to 2018.
“I would never do that,” said Usher, adding that he and Jennifer have a “policy.” “If this is a business that you’re in, I’m going to help establish and work on it. But it’s your business, you know, and then we have the things that we do together, but it’s not a mandate," he shared. “It’s a choice in [a] relationship.”
“Your things are your things, my things are. I have something I’m passionate about. I need your support, I need your help, I want to get counsel,” the “Coming Home” singer continued. “But those kinds of boundaries established, I think hopefully gonna make this a more sustainable relationship.”
Usher concluded that the marriage is his “third one” and that he’s “trying to make certain” that he doesn’t take his ring off.
On Tuesday, the Raymonds celebrated their first wedding anniversary, and Usher posted a piano serenade dedicated to Jennifer, whom he calls his “angel.”
