For Friday, May 20, this week’s episode finds us with some freshly-discovered treasures for you, your family, and friends to get into + share with others. It contains a healthy dose of sonic vibes, this month’s BET Amplified artist to know, and, of course, something streaming that’s a feast for the eyes.
So bon appétit to all those true savants who are purveyors of content culture out there.
For Listeners Only:
Grammy Award-winning R&B powerhouse Lucky Daye teams up with Mark Ronson for a new track called “Too Much.” In partnership with Audemars Piguet, this track is the culmination of the two participating in the brand’s miniseries, Syncing Sounds, which can be watched on YouTube now. Looking forward to hearing more collaborations from the N’Awlins artist in the near future.
On my personal favorite artists, Xavier Omär, returns after a small hiatus with an addictive cut called “Feelings 4 You.” Made specifically for those who have never told the one they loved about how they feel or have been told, “Feelings 4 You” is a reminder that life is too short and that when it comes to love — one should always seize the day. Inspired by his journey with his now-wife, this song is an early look at XO’s upcoming independent EP, which will be released this July.
Making another solid return to This Weekend is IDK, whose eight-track, Kaytranada-produced project Simple has been stuck in rotation at my house since its release. The PG County rap star goes big with this one, taking listeners with him to Paris as the introspective yet dance-worthy number promises to put you in a reflective mood. Elevating to another level, IDK delivers another standout that beckons serious replays throughout this weekend and beyond.
Special Mentions: There is also some exceptionally dope work from the likes of Sudan Archives (“Selfish Soul”), FKJ & Toro y Moi (“A Moment of Mystery”), bLAck pARty (“Hotline”), The Notorious B.I.G. feat. Ty Dolla $ign and Bella Alubo (“G.O.A.T.”), Omah Lay (“Woman”), and Diana Ross feat. Tame Impala (“Turn Up The Sunshine”) that you cannot afford to miss.
Watch The Streams:
Four years removed from his first Netflix comedy special, Katt Williams triumphantly returns to deliver the funny in World War III. Taking to Las Vegas’ Dolby Live Theatre, Williams breaks down our inner conflict between lies and the truth as the Omicron variant ravages across America and systemic racism plaguing the Black community. Despite it being recorded during a wild time to be indoors, Williams knows how to pull in audiences with premises ranging from defending President Joe Biden to equating chicken wings to the end of the world. Don’t skip this must-see special, as there will be plenty of topics for you to debate and discuss with friends.
A personal fave due to its ingenious storytelling and varying animation styles, Love, Death & Robots: Volume 3 returns to Netflix with a host of odd, weird, and touching short vignettes that will satisfy longtime fans. David Fincher and Tim Miller strike again with sublime brilliance. Without spoiling anything for newcomers, Miller and Fincher give audiences another binge-worthy, cruel but true, and beautifully animated anthology series that will stay with you until Volume 4 comes out. Everything about this show screams genius, and, yes, there is no half-stepping with Love, Death & Robots as it is just as impactful as the first volume.
For the kid still residing in adults who are also looking to watch something alongside their own progeny, Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers is the perfect film to watch over the weekend. The short-lived late ‘80s animated series, which spawned a host of Disney-led merch from lunchboxes to video games, gets a satirical yet earnest reboot, starring Kiki Layne as Detective Ellie Whitfield and John Mulaney and Andy Samberg as the two rodent gumshoes Chip and Dale. Stacked to the brim with many Disney and pop culture cameos and easter eggs, the film is both earnest and a sharp critique of the Hollywood machine that considers animation “not a film genre.” If anything, audiences will run this film back for the Ugly Sonic jokes alone.
Live at the Experience:
Before you go thinking that this week’s This Weekend round-up is IDK-overload, just hear me out. The rising rap star will embark on a world tour across North America and Europe that is not to miss. After displaying his impeccable skills as an MC and producer on NPR Tiny Desk, audiences are clamoring for the PG County native to bring his talents (and live band) to their hometowns around the globe.
Simple. World Tour 2022 marks the culmination of hard work put together by IDK and Grammy-winning producer Kaytranada. With his trademark grooves placed alongside IDK’s musical oeuvre, songs like “Breathe,” “The Code,” and more will surely pop as they’ve never done before amongst an audience experience it live and in living color. Tickets are available for copping now, so be sure not to wait to make a date with IDK as this new creative territory he now reigns over is an experience to take in and enjoy!
