Drea Kelly Defends Keeping R. Kelly’s Last Name

The singer's ex-wife says she's earned it in 'blood, sweat, and tears.'

Drea Kelly isn’t concerned what people think about her keeping the surname of her ex-husband, the now-imprisoned R. Kelly.

The dancer and actress, born Andrea Kelly, appeared on the latest episode of “Reality With the King” and detailed why she controversially kept the R&B singer’s last name. R. Kelly is currently serving a 30-year sentence in a federal facility on a sex trafficking conviction, simultaneously spending 20 years in prison on convictions of child pornography and enticement.

But despite her ex-husband’s legal history, Drea stands by her decision to keep his last name. The ex-spouses share three children, Robert Jr., 22, Jaah, 24, and Joann, 26.

Around the 14-minute mark of the video below, Drea explained that because she’s performed alongside Kelly and worked as his backup dancer and creative director, she’s earned the name, similar to Tina Turner, who was formerly married to her musical partner and abuser, Ike Turner.

“You don’t even know what my profession is, and at the end of the day, what do I bring to the table if I am the table?” Drea told host Carlos King.

“I brought a whole womb. I birthed children, so for women to even say something like that is sad to me … And because you can’t clock what I do, because you haven’t done your research, you think it’s okay to go on the internet and say, ‘She don’t do nothing, Tina Turner did something.’ The only difference between me and Tina Turner is she sang on the stage with Ike, I danced on one with Robert.”

Drea continued explaining that she’s “earned this name in blood, sweat and tears.”

“It's my kid's name. “When all the s*** hit the fan, how would you feel if your name is Brown and your kids’ name is Brown, and your family goes through something? You tell your kids, ‘Oh, you’re a Brown by yourself; I'm out.’ … No. If my kids have to go through it as Kelly, they mama going through it as Kelly.”

Drea added that she’s dedicated to taking the “tarnish” off the name for her children to “live and celebrate” as Kellys, naming her efforts in domestic violence awareness and public speaking engagements.

“And here’s the real gag,” she continued. “Boo, if my name wasn’t Kelly you wouldn’t even care… ‘Case Ms. Jones is going through the same thing I’m going through right now. Ms. White is going through it. Ms. Anderson is going through it, but y’all don't care about it; y'all not on her page commenting; you’re not trying to be an advocate; you’re being nosey. You know why? Because my last name is Kelly.”

R. Kelly and Drea were married from 1996 to 2009 and claimed to have been abused by the disgraced artist.
