Angela Bassett Says She Was ‘Deserving’ of 2023 Academy Award
Without a doubt, Angela Bassett deserved the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2023.
Bassett’s second nomination in nearly 30 years, resulted in a loss to Jamie Lee Curtis, star of “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” Bassett was nominated for her portrayal of Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
The actress discussed the snub–which went viral due to her reaction–in the March “Town & Country” cover story. The two-time Golden Globes winner said she “found it interesting” that she “wouldn’t be allowed to be disappointed at an outcome where I thought I was deserving.
“I love applauding people. But in that moment… I have put in: put in the time, put in good work over time,” she continued. “I didn’t think that was a gift. I thought it was a given.”
Bassett’s extensive filmography and persistence earned her an honorary Academy Award last year, 30 years after being nominated for Best Actress for her portrayal of Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do With It?”
In her 15-minute speech, Bassett thanked Black actresses who paved the way for her, including Cicely Tyson, the first Black woman to receive an honorary Oscar.
“They were my North Star, my guiding light, proof that while the road may not be without curves and bumps, there was a way to fulfill what I believed deep in my soul was my destiny,” Bassett said while accepting the honor, presented by Regina King.
