BET Awards 2022: Jazmine Sullivan Wins Best Female R&B/Pop Artist
Fresh off tour supporting her Grammy Award-winning album, Heaux Tales, Jazmine Sullivan won Best Female R&B/Pop Artist at the BET Awards 2022 picking up the first award during The Culture’s Biggest Night.
The award was presented by Janelle Monae who wished the audience a happy Black Music Month and happy Pride—she also gave a shout out to Black women, Black queer artists, and Black non-binary artists, “in a world that tries to control us.”
Nominated alongside Ari Lennox, Chlöe, Doja Cat, H.E.R., Mary J. Blige and Summer Walker — Sullivan strode to the stage dressed in a flattering pale purple pantsuit.
In accepting her award, the Philadelphia native said, “As always, I do this for the women — for my sisters especially. I wanna speak directly to the men: ‘We need y’all.’” Sullivan commented on the recent decision by the Supreme Court saying, “If you’ve ever benefited from a woman making the toughest decision of her life… which is to terminate a pregnancy. We need you.”
