In October, college football season is in full swing and HBCU homecomings are taking place across the nation. Homecoming is such a vibe that Beyoncé’s Homecoming concert documentary was inspired by the annual events.

While it is difficult to tie down the origin story of HBCU homecomings, it is believed that Morehouse College in 1924 curated the celebration for alumni along with a football game against a rival school.

Despite on-going challenges, HBCUs are still thriving a century later. According to the Department of Labor, there are more than 228,000 students currently matriculating in the 107 HBCUs across the nation.

Some schools have already celebrated homecoming, but there are still plenty more institutions planning big celebrations of Black culture and excellence. Whether it’s a weekend or a full-on week you can be sure to witness epic concerts, step shows, sororities, fraternities, and proud alumni gathered in the spirit of Black joy.

Clark Atlanta University: October 13 to October 19, homecoming football game versus Miles College on October 19.
