3 Reasons Why Coi Leray Deserves More Credit
Coi Leray has been one of the most fascinating acts in hip hop since her viral hit “Huddy” and debut mixtape Everythingcoz in 2018.
The 24-year-old New Jersey native is part of the surge of women emcees in hip hop and has amassed a great deal of success in her short-lived career.
The “No Parties” rapper is feature friendly, with guest appearances on YN Jay’s “Triple S” remix, “Slide” with Gunna, and “Big Purr” with Pooh Shiesty, just to name a few.
Coi Leray is still a rising star with being relatively new in the game, and as we gear up for the BET Hip Hop Awards 2021, here’s a look at why she deserves credit.
Numbers Don't Lie
Coi’s numbers speak for themselves.
She earned the title of Billboard’s R&B/Hip Hop Rookie of the Month in April. “No More Parties,” which was released at the end of January, is already certified Gold. In addition, her freestyle video received more than five million views, making it the most-watched XXL Freshman clip this year.
And besides having two Hot 100 singles (“No More Parties” and “Big Purr”), she’s already collaborated with big names like Gunna, DDG, and Yung Bleu.
She’s Not The First To Mess Up
Was it not just this past August when Cam’ron forgot his lyrics during the Dipset vs. Lox Verzuz Battle? Coi Leray shook her butt when she forgot her lyrics, but Cam threatened the crowd after getting booed and forgetting his.
Even Kendrick Lamar has forgotten his lyrics. If butchering her XXL freestyle is your only reservation for Coi, many artists should have those same reservations. Polo G supported Leray by saying, “keep goin’.”

She’s Unique
Coi Leray is subject to controversy because she’s different.
First, there’s Coi’s sound. Leray has been compared to Dej Loaf, Playboi Carti, and even Rico Nasty. She has an angsty high-energy style that is more vibe-oriented than lyrically substantiative, which, although it makes her sound like a lot of different people, in reality, no one sounds like her.
Coi Leray also looks different. She does not have the aesthetic of her peers in hip hop, and, as a result, it’s a constant point of conversation, to the extent that she’s made mention of it.
“My body is always trending,” Leray said on Twitter. “I don’t understand.”
In today’s age of body positivity, especially in lieu of what singer Lizzo has endured of late with body shaming, it only makes sense to uplift Coi instead of punching down with the trolls who’ve made her an easy target.
