Angela Alsobrooks Makes History as Maryland's First Black Woman Elected to the U.S. Senate

In a groundbreaking victory, Alsobrooks defeats Larry Hogan in the Maryland Senate race, marking a significant milestone in representation as the fourth Black woman ever elected to the Senate.

In a historic victory, Angela Alsobrooks has emerged as the winner of the Maryland Senate race, defeating Republican Larry Hogan, according to reports

This landmark achievement positions Alsobrooks as the first Black woman to represent Maryland in the United States Senate and marks her as just the fourth Black woman ever elected to the Senate.

Alsobrooks, who has served as the county executive of Prince George's County since 2018, has deep roots in Maryland, where she was born and raised. Her commitment to public service and her community paved the way for this significant milestone. In her tenure, Alsobrooks has championed several key issues, including abortion rights, educational investment, and economic development, alongside a commitment to diplomatic foreign policies.

"It's remarkable to think that in two years, America will celebrate its 250th birthday," Alsobrooks said during her victory speech last night (Nov. 5). "In all those years, there have been more than 2,000 people who have served in the United States Senate. Only three have looked like me. I want to salute those who came before me and made it possible for me to stand on this stage tonight, who sacrificed, I will continue to carry with me."

Maryland Governor Wes Moore played a vital role in supporting Alsobrooks' campaign, consistently backing her throughout the election process. At her victory celebration, he delivered an inspiring speech, declaring that Maryland had made "herstory.”

“We just voted overwhelmingly, decisively, and lovely to send our friend Angela Alsobrooks to the United States Senate,” he said. “Y’all, we did a thang… I wanna say thank you to this state and this crew because two years ago, I was humbled and honored that together we made history, and now tonight… I stand with y’all tonight, humbled and honored that tonight we made herstory… We are sending a fighter to Capitol Hill.”
