Call it unchartered terrority for sports—using cyber crime against the competition.

In the first-known case of its kind in the sports world, the St. Louis Cardinals are being investigated by the F.B.I. for allegedly hacking into the networks of the Houston Astros, the New York Times reported Tuesday.

According to the report, the Cardinals allegedly tapped into the Astros' database by using passwords associated with Jeff Luhnow, current Astros general manager and former Cardinals executive. They then accessed Astros' information about statistics, scouting reports and possible trades.

The investigation was launched last year and is set to conclude soon. 

"Major League Baseball has been aware of and has fully cooperated with the federal investigation into the illegal breach of the Astros' baseball operations database," the MLB wrote in a statement to the media. "Once the investigative process has been completed by federal law enforcement officials, we will evaluate the next steps and will make decisions promptly."

Both the Astros and Cardinals haven't cooperated. Law enforcement officials haven't release a name of the possible culprits, but believe the hackers are scorned Cardinals' front office personnel with a vendetta against Luhnow.
