2024 NAACP Image Awards: President’s Award Winner Rihanna Urges Allies To “Pull Up”
Anytime Bad Gal Riri graces the world with her presence, blessings, and virality follow. At the 51st annual NAACP Image Awards, Rihanna showed up, doused in the color of royalty, to accept the President’s Award. This honor is presented in recognition of special achievement and distinguished public service, and Rihanna, ever the layered artist, is a devoted philanthropist. She started The Clara Lionel Foundation in 2012 in honor of her grandparents, Clara and Lionel Braithwaite, to invest in climate justice initiatives in the Caribbean and the United States and help communities prepare for and withstand natural disasters.
“The purpose is bigger than me, right?’ My part is a very small part of what’s being done in this world and what is yet to be done,” Rihanna said, accepting the honor. The pop superstar and mother of two joins a short list of fellow giants in their games as recipients of this prestigious award like: LeBron James, Muhammad Ali, Colin Powell, Jay-Z, Lauryn Hill and Soledad O'Brien.
“If there’s anything that I’ve learned, it’s that we can only fix this world together,” Rihanna continued. “We can’t do it divided. I can’t emphasize that enough. We can’t let the desensitivity seep in.” Rihanna wanted the whole world to know that it was beyond time for us all to ban together in the protection and care of Black Lives. With police and civilian violence against Black people who are unarmed, not a threat and more often than not, in a position of victim steadily increasing, the international superstar used her platform to urge everyone to “pull up!”
