Beyoncé is taking to her site to teach her fans some history in honor of Black History Month. The singer has been spotlighting "the unsung heroes" of our community and will continue introducing us to some remarkable characters throughout the month to celebrate them and inspire us.
"In honor of African American men and women who have worked diligently dedicating their lives to inspire our future, I want to shine a spotlight on their achievements and sacrifices during Black History Month. These are some of the unsung heroes, past and present. For 28 days I will highlight their stories in hopes to inspire, motivate and move you," she wrote.
Spotlighted so far are gay Civil Rights leader Bayard Rustin; the first Black female pilot Bessie Coleman; Edward Bouchet, who was the first African American to receive a Ph.D from Yale and just the sixth person to earn one in physics in 1874. She also honored Anne Lowe, the designer behind Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis' wedding dress when she married John F. Kennedy in 1953, and Mae Jemison, who in 1992 became the first African American female astronaut in space aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor.
