El Debarge Enters Rehab, Cancels Tour
R&B singer El Debarge announced earlier today (Feb. 14), via a press release, that he has checked himself into a rehabilitation center. Now, Debarge will have to put his big comeback on hold.
After a 16-year musical hiatus, El Debarge released "Second Chance" this past November. Thursday (Feb. 17) was supposed to be his first stop as part of a tour with Kem and Ledisi, but as a result of his decision to enter rehab, Debarge has canceled all appearances (Musiq Soulchild will replace him). "I hate to disappoint my fans but it is necessary for me to take the time to work on me so that I may continue to share my music and my story with everyone," stated Debarge. "I thank everyone in advance for their prayers and well wishes and hope that you will respect my privacy during this time."
Back in June, El Debarge performed on stage at the 2010 BET Awards, and later lent his talent to "A Very BET Christmas" and BET's "Celebration of Gospel." He was also interviewed for the "BET 30" special, where he spoke about his struggle with heroin and crack. The 49-year old star did over a year in prison back in 2008-2009 as a result of his drug abuse. According to reports, rapper 50 Cent played a role in helping Debarge check into rehab.
