Fabolous Defends Tommy Hilfiger Against Racism Claims
A throwback look into his closet has forced Fabolous to explain some of his fashion choices.
"Yesterday I posted me wearing a Tommy Hilfiger shirt even tho it was for #TBT," he tweeted. "A lot of ppl commented it was in bad taste bcuz TH is racist."
The photo to which he's referring shows him in Hilfiger sweater and a Jesus piece chain, two items that were an iconic representation of the strain of materialism in hip hop during that era. He captioned it with a nod to Q-Tip's feature on Mobb Deep's song, "Drink Away the Pain (Situations)."
"I remember this rumor as well & also felt like I wouldn't support TH anymore," Fab continued via Twitter. "But when u research it, it's nothin more than a rumor. ... even if u google it, there's no root to it. ... Funny thing is TH supported & embraced Hip Hop a lot in the 90s. Had rappers in there fashion shows, Aaliyah as a model, ... Many different ethnicities in the promo ads.. I even met TH myself & spoke with him."
Hilfiger, too, has responded to the rumor, clarifying years ago that it's not that he doesn't want Black people wearing his clothes, rather it was more of a sense of distance from the hip hop community. "[Hip hop] It fueled a lot of growth, but it took us away from our roots," he once told Bloomberg News. "...There is an image and attitude to most brands and that’s really important. I like to stick to my heritage and not chase trends and at that point we were chasing trends."
