Box Office: Hunger Games Takes the Turkey Over Holiday Weekend
Despite the temptations of turkey and Black Friday shopping, Thanksgiving is traditionally a big weekend at the box office. This year, most moviegoers chose The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 as their post-feast film. Mockingjay has topped this holiday weekend box office with a whopping $82.7 million gross.
The third film of the franchise, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson, scored the third-best gross of all time for the five-day Thanksgiving weekend. Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Frozen hold the number one and two spots, in that order.
Coming in second place was Penguins of Madagascar, starring the voices of John Malkovich and Benedict Cumberbatch, which debuted with $36 million. The number was a considerable disappointment for Dreamworks, the studio that released the film, which usually scores better numbers with animated family releases.
Taking the third spot was the animated flick Big Hero 6, earning an additional $26 million in its fourth weekend. Rounding out the top five were Horrible Bosses 2, starring Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston and Jamie Foxx, and the star-studded Interstellar.
Next week, Reese Witherspoon's Wild will attempt to lure adult audiences, though a Hunger Games three-peat seems like a certainty.
