Korto Momolu just presented her "Monaco" collection during New York Fall Fashion Week and already the Project Runway Season 5 runner-up is planning to exit that scene. The Liberian-born designer (who went on to design for the female president of Liberia) wants to take things down a notch and simplify her career and she's starting by making September's Fashion Week her last one.
"I just want to thank all of you — press, friends, family, everyone that has come out," Momolu said to the crowd gathered in the basement of Cellar Bar lounge at the Byrant Park Hotel. "There are so many people in my life who have supported me, and brought me to where I am in my life."
Producing a Fashion Week show costs at least $100,000 and the designer doesn't always earn that amount back in sales. Momolu herself scaled back on the event by forgoing a typical runway show and displaying her designs on static forms instead.
"With fashion week, it's entertainment to a certain degree, it's publicity to a certain degree. [B]uyers do come out, but it's not like back in the day when people would come to the shows to make purchases. Now it's just entertainment," Momolu explained. "And then the week after, the buyers call you and say, 'Hey, I want to come see the line.' I can just do that on my website — a grassroots method."
