DJ Esco Talks About How He Met Future for the First Time
DJ Esco, aka “The Coolest in the World,” has been in the spotlight lately thanks to Future’s massive success of his album Dirty Sprite 2. The 28-year-old DJ was the next guest on the Rap Radar podcast, and it was a pretty engaging conversation.
Esco shared his story of when he was locked up in a Dubai jail for 56 nights after celebrating his birthday in Amsterdam. If you didn’t catch his story on The Fader earlier this year, he retells it with more detail, explaining the series of events that led him to be stuck in jail for that period of time. Some highlights were he had no contact with Future and the entourage, he befriended the warden to help him get out, and he was respected in jail because inmates knew he was American.
Later on, Esco talks about his first time meeting Future, where he states that they go back as far as 2008. “You know what it was? I was so straight forward, that’s what made us go together. Our birthdays are 7-8 days apart. I really told him some s**t that nobody has ever told him before and we instantly connected. He handed me a mixtape, hosted by DJ Scream. We was at Magic City in the parking lot and I was like, ‘Dog, I don’t really f**k with no CDs with no ni**as talking. That’s how we met, on some music s**t.”
Esco also goes into his love for hip hop and lists some of the artists he was influenced by growing up: DJ Quik, The Dogg Pound and Nate Dogg, to name a few. His sister was heavy into East Coast artists, where she put him on to Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, N.O.R.E. and Biggie. Since Esco was raised in Atlanta, he naturally listened to Goodie Mob and OutKast.
