Roger Goodell Meets Charlie Strong to Talk Core Values
Roger Goodell is looking for ways to strengthen the NFL’s personal conduct policy after a rash of players being involved in domestic violence incidents — headlined by Ray Rice — and even a well-publicized child abuse allegation against Adrian Peterson.
That being said, the NFL commissioner and league executive Troy Vincent met with Charlie Strong on Sunday morning to discuss the University of Texas football coach’s praised “Core Values” system, which was the grounds for nine Longhorn players being dismissed.
Just last week, offensive lineman Kennedy Estelle was dismissed from the program with two other players for undisclosed reasons.
Strong’s “Core Values” center around five principles for his players to live by: honesty, no drugs, no stealing, no weapons and treating women with respect, according to an ESPN report.
By the sounds of Vincent’s tweets Sunday, he and Goodell were awfully impressed with Strong’s approach of building solid football players and even better men.
“@Strong_TexasFB’s emphasis on character & respect over talent is molding the next generation of football talent,” Vincent tweeted. “Standards are key. Commissioner and I are focused on strengthening relationships with colleges. Thank you for your time today @Strong_TexasFB.”
"Anytime a player is dismissed from this program, it hurts me," Strong said to ESPN on Tuesday after Estelle's dismissal. "We're here to help young men. We're not here to run young men off. That is not our job. We're here to help them. It just bothers you, because when you've been given opportunities, you want to make sure you have every resource available for them to be successful."
Could the “Core Values” system be instituted in the NFL?
