‘So Beautiful’ Young Girls React To Seeing Halle Bailey As ‘The Little Mermaid’ For The First Time
The Little Mermaid live-action trailer released late last week has garnered a lot of reaction, but perhaps none less priceless than that of young Black girls seeing it for the first time and being completely enamored.
In the Disney film’s first-look trailer, Halle Bailey, who plays Ariel, emerges under the sea and sings the song “Part of Your World.” While it’s only for a few seconds, the clip is long enough for some of the movie’s youngest fans to identify with its main character.
Videos soon began going viral of the girls seeing superstar singer and actress as Ariel for the first time, and they’ll simply make your day.
"Her skin… it looks like mine," one girl said to her mother in a compilation posted to social media. “It’s so beautiful,” another girl noted with excitement.
The reactions got Bailey’s attention, who reacted to the multitude of videos that came out on Instagram and TikTok.
"People have been sending these reactions to me all weekend and I'm truly in awe," the 22-year-old actress tweeted. "This means the world to me."
The movie is slated for a May 2023 release and is a reimagined version of the 1989 animated classic. It tells the story of Ariel, who eventually falls in love with human Prince Eric, played by Jonah Hauer-King. Melissa McCarthy plays the role of the villainous Ursula, while Javier Bardem assumes the role of Ariel’s dad King Triton. Daveed Diggs voices Sebastian, while Jacob Tremblay voices Flounder, and Awkwafina voices Scuttle.
