Mariah Carey Is The First Artist To Achieve A No. 1 Single Across Four Decades
According to Billboard, Mariah Carey is now the first artist in history to earn a No. 1 single across four separate decades.
On Monday (Dec. 30), the publication released its latest Hot 100 chart index update for the week of January 4, and the legendary songstress’ enduring Christmas classic, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” will still hold its position atop the charts for the third week in a row, stretching its historical reign into 2020.
The single’s third, chart-topping week was boosted by a 33 percent increase as the holiday season reached its apex last week, Billboard notes. Nonetheless, this is a major feat for Mimi. Earlier this month, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” resurged and rose to No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart for the first time in its 25 year history since it was originally released in 1994.
Not only did this milestone mark the "Caution" singer’s 19th No. 1 single, but it’s her only No. 1 single of the ‘10s, according to MTV News. Per Billboard’s breakdown, Carey notched 14 No .1 singles in the ‘90s followed by four others in the 2000s before “All I Want for Christmas Is You” topped the charts in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
Of course, no one was more stunned by the news than the Queen of Christmas, herself, who celebrated the exciting news on social media with her longtime fans.
“Yaaaaaaaaay!!! WE. DID. IT,” Mimi penned to her 21 million social followers Twitter.
“But...what’s a decade?” she playfully added at the end.

Shortly after, she re-posted a throwback clip one fan had shared in her mentions from an old interview with renowned radio and television host Donnie Simpson during promotions for her 1994 Merry Christmas album. This is the album that “All I Want for Christmas Is You” comes from. In the clip, Simpson and Carey discuss the possibility of one of her holiday songs becoming “a classic Christmas song.”
“Looking back at this now is incredibly surreal @DonnieSimpson,” Mimi reflected.
With this latest achievement, Carey is officially in a class of her own. According to Billboard, she has now surpassed Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Usher, who all had hits top the charts in three decades.
BET sends Mariah Carey its congratulations!
