Michael Oher Requests Tuohys Stop Using His Name and Claiming They 'Adopted' Him
Michael Oher has requested a judge to prevent Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy from asserting themselves as his adoptive parents now that their conservatorship over him has ended.
According to People, the retired NFL star, whose life story sparked the Academy-nominated film, “The Blind Side,” filed a motion this week in the probate court of Shelby County, Tenn., asking that the couple be refrained from using his name, image, and likeness for profit alongside claims that they “adopted” him or are his “adoptive parents” on their website and continuing to “book events” as Oher’s adoptive parents “without his consent.”
The documents refer to an incident at Eastern Florida State College, where Leigh Anne was listed as a guest speaker on the website. Her bio mentioned her as “the adoptive mother of NFL football star Oher.”
Last August, Oher filed a lawsuit claiming the Tuohys tricked him into signing conservatorship documents that he thought were his adoption papers. He also alleged that the couple, including their two biological children, each received $225,000 and 2.5% of the film's "defined net proceeds” while he received nothing.
However, the Tuohys later filed court documents showing that the 37-year-old former athlete was paid $138,311.01 by them in ten installments for 16 years beginning in 2007. There are also checks from 2021 and 2022, totaling more than $8,000, that still need to be cleared.
