Prince Harry Denies He And Meghan Markle Accused The Royal Family Of Racism
Prince Harry is shedding more light on one of the most viral moments from he and wife Meghan Markle’s explosive 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey. In case you missed it, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex claimed that there were “concerns and conversations about how dark [Archie's] skin might be when he's born."
For the promotion of his tell-all memoir Spare, Prince Harry sat down with U.K. television station ITV’s Tom Bradby on Sunday (Jan. 8) to clear up any confusion regarding racism and the Royal Family, according to PEOPLE.
"In the Oprah interview, you accuse members of your family of racism,” Bradby said.
"No," the Duke of Sussex quickly responded. "The British press said that, right? Did Meghan ever mention 'they're racists'?"
Bradby replied: "She said there were troubling comments about Archie's skin color. Wouldn't you describe that as essentially racist?"
“I wouldn’t,” Harry said. “Not having lived within that family.”
"The difference between racism and unconscious bias...the two things are different. Once it's been acknowledged or pointed out to you as an individual, otherwise an institution, that you have unconscious bias, you, therefore, have an opportunity to learn and grow from that...otherwise, unconscious bias then moves into the category of racism.”
Following the Oprah interview, Prince William responded to the claims, insisting that the royals are “very much not a racist family.” Buckingham Palace also issued a statement after the interview: “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning” and would be “addressed by the family privately.”
