Keyshia Cole is a multi-award-winning R&B singer-songwriter, producer and television personality. Cole was born in Oakland, California, to Francine "Frankie" Lons and famed boxing trainer Virgil Hunter. At the age of two, she was adopted by Leon and Yvonne Cole, subsequently changing her last name to Cole as well. Cole started her music career at the age of 12 after meeting MC Hammer. She has grown to be one of the top R&B singers of our time.
Making It To the Spotlight
It's alleged that Keyshia Cole made a friendship with late rapper Tupac Shakur. The rapper even asked her to write a hook for him the night of his untimely death. At a young age, Keyshia's gift was seen by all of the talented musicians in the industry. In 2002, Keyshia was signed to A&M Records after impressing A&R Ron Fair, who loved her song "Love." That song would later go on to be her first platinum single.
Debut Single
Keyshia Cole's debut album, The Way It Is, was released in June 2005 but spawned her debut single, "Never," featuring Eve on March 23, 2004. The song was used on the soundtrack of Barbershop 2: Back in Business. Though this song was released first, Keyshia's official debut single was "I Changed My Mind" featuring Kanye West. The single debuted on November 9, 2004. The radio remix featured rapper Shyne and peaked at No. 71 on Billboard Hot 100 and No. 23 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
