Ms. Pat’s ascension is truly inspiring.

Week after week, the all-star comedian serves laughs and a dose of common sense as Patricia Carson on her namesake BET+ series “The Ms. Pat Show,” which returns for its fourth season on May 23 (Thursday) on the network. As a natural-born hustler from Atlanta, this entertainer is really on her grind.

Although her beginnings as a youth were starkly different from her life today, Ms. Pat hasn’t forgotten where she came from and uses the reminders of her past to propel her forward. That unrelenting spirit has made her a household name and superstar in Hollywood and beyond.

As in demand as she is, don’t be surprised if you get a text from Ms. Pat after hours because this boss is on the move and on a mission to the top.

Taking on roles that truly speak to her core, she currently stars in the remake of “Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead,” which takes a fresh approach to the 1991 comedy with a Black family. Produced by Tyra Banks, this film punctuates the realities of single parenthood, employee fatigue, and tough decision-making by youth, something Ms. Pat knows all too well.

“I’m vibing on so many of the creative choices the director Wade Allain-Marcus made. He’s definitely got an eye and added a unique twist and feeling to the film. And the script…Chuck Hayward is a wordsmith genius,” said executive producer Tyra Banks. “You’ll have to watch the movie a few times to really grasp all of the super sharp and funny dialogue he wrote. It comes at you so fast and just when you’re about to laugh at one line, another curveball of a line comes and it’s just so clever.” 

Along with Ms. Pat, “The Ms. Pat Show” returns with cast members J. Bernard Calloway, Tami Roman, Vince Swann, Briyana Guadalupe, Theodore John Barnes, and Brittany Inge.

In celebration of the show’s new season, the comedian calls on the series' fans for a special assignment, designating May 23rd as “Break the App Day.”

“If you thought seasons one, two, and three are funny, season four is hilarious!” said the comedian.

Bet.com sat down with Ms. Pat as she divulged on the personal touch she gives her onscreen roles and how her gritty upbringing has ignited her path into stardom.

Bet.com: What real-life mom experiences did you lean on to bring your character to life in “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead?”

Ms. Pat: I'm a mom every day. So when that role came up, I was like, “Oh, this is a piece of cake. I do this every day.” The only part I couldn't relate to was the getaway. I ain't never had that type of getaway.

Bet.com: Doing a remake can be tricky. What is it about this film that was worth revisiting the 90s for?

Ms. Pat: I watched the original as a young girl and I always liked it. I was really excited when my team brought it to me. What I liked about this movie was that it was funny. The first family was all white and this time it's the same movie, but from a Black family perspective. So that's what I liked about it. 

Bet.com: While your character was out of town, the kids had their cake and ate it too! But as a young teen, your real life experiences were much different. 

Ms. Pat: I raised myself. I had my first baby at 14. I was a mom early. So around 19 or 20, I didn’t put myself in a situation I couldn't get out of. My survival skills kicked in and I had to keep it moving.

Bet.com: Fans are seeing the evolution of your career as a stand-up comedian and an actor. How does it feel to be in demand in multiple sectors of the entertainment industry?

Ms. Pat: I'm very busy, but I look at it as being very blessed because it took me over 20 years to get to this point in my career. I'm just thankful. I'm happy. I'm not gonna lie; they be working me sometimes! I be like, “Do these people know I'm 52 years old?!”

But one thing about me, I’ve always been the type of person that's gonna hustle and grind. So this is just like me being back on the corner back in the day.

Bet.com: Season four of “The Ms. Pat Show” premieres today. What can we expect this new season?

Ms. Pat: It’s not only hilarious, it's also very informative about mental abuse, teenage pregnancy, and racism, but all in a funny way so nobody is uncomfortable, but it is still putting the truth out there.

We have an episode where my mama used to tell me, “You know, you ugly.” I'm 52, and sometimes I can still hear those voices in my head. Even though I’m healed, every now and then, certain things can trigger the memory.

We did a whole episode on it like my mama had come back from the dead as a ghost and she’s just in my ear all the time. It's such a touching episode.

Bet.com: How did you overcome that type of childhood trauma?

Ms. Pat: I had to learn to love myself. A lot of times, when people beat you down, they beat the love that you have in you, out of you.

One day I just woke up and said, “F - - k the world.” I start putting me first. And when I started putting me first and loving myself, I realized that I'm a better person.

Plus, I had a kid when I was 14. So I not only had to live for myself, I had to live for that child too. When you become a mom, it awakes something and it made me mature faster. It made me really look around and realize the state of life I was in and I was like “I can't let my daughter go through this.”

Bet.com: What messages do you pour into your children so that they know they are loved and valued?

Ms. Pat: I always tell my kids, I love them and I’ll be there for them. 

I made a lot of mistakes early on with my daughter that I think she held against me. So once she realized I loved her, we started to grow as mom and daughter. Plus my daughter is gay [and] I had my own issues with her sexuality. But now, we are all on the same [page], and one big happy family.

Bet.com: What’s on the horizon for you?

Ms. Pat: I have a project on the table that I think might get green-lit. I really can't talk about it right now. I just finished filming season two of “Ms. Pat Settles It.” I'm also working on a book. I got quite a few things in the fire.
