Marissa Alexander Back in Court, New Trial Postponed to December
The retrial for Marissa Alexander has been pushed from July 28 to Dec. 1, tentatively.
Alexander, who was convicted and sentenced to 20 years for firing a gun at her abusive estranged husband, returned to a Jacksonville courtroom on Tuesday seeking a second Stand Your Ground hearing. She was previously denied immunity from prosecution under Florida’s controversial self-defense law.
The prosecutors and her defense attorneys both agreed to push the date.
"I don't believe we can really try this case until the dust settles,” Duval County Court Judge James Daniel said regarding the state’s new Warning Shot bill that awaits action from Gov. Rick Scott.
If convicted again, Alexander faces 60 years in prison. Her next court date is Aug. 1 for motions to suppress evidence.
