ESPN Tributes Stuart Scott With Memorial Plaque
Stuart Scott will be remembered for a lot of things — his charm, the way he infused sports journalism with pop culture, for being the most prominent Black sportscaster in the nation — but those who loved Scott most need only two syllables to express their fond memories: Boo-yah.
Scott's ESPN family has erected a memorial dedicated to the late, great SportsCenter anchor — who died of cancer in January — with his signature catchphrase on a wall of the network's most famous sayings at their studios in New York City.
Several of Scott's friends and family were present at the unveiling, The Washington Post reports, along with many members of his SportsCenter family.
Scott “didn’t push the envelope,” former ESPN anchor Dan Patrick said in a video tribute, “he bulldozed it. He shook things up, he changed things."
Another colleague, Bonnie Bernstien, expounded on Scott's impact via Facebook, shortly after his death. “ESPN executives didn’t know what to make of him in the early ’90s. The hip-hop slang. The catchphrases the bosses didn’t understand,” she wrote. “But you know what? He never wavered. Not one bit. He actually reveled in it. I always admired that about him and hoped the bosses would come to understand what I saw when Stu and I were on the road together covering the NBA Playoffs. The guy was a superstar.”
