Gary Coleman Documentary Premieres Offering New Insight Into the Late Actor’s Life

The new 90-minute film deep-dives into each era of the beloved child star’s career.

Peacock officially debuted their documentary “Gary,” which examines the "fascinating life and mysterious death” of one of Hollywood's most cherished child stars, Gary Coleman.

The new 90-minute film deep-dives into each era of the late actor’s life. Other highlights include his discovery by the late Norman Lear at eight years old and his troubles with his parents and team, who allegedly misused his funds.

In a video clip, Coleman says he decided to look into his finances and fired his entire team.

“Enough of all of you people, I'm sick of all of you people, I don't want to hear from any of you people,” he said about them in an interview at the time. “I want accounting, I want it now.”

Following two years of investigations and an unsuccessful attempt by his parents to establish a conservatorship, Coleman regained control of his finances. According to his attorney, Drew Rice, they had been moving funds from secure accounts into various investments, all of which ultimately proved unsuccessful.

The doc also looked at his lesser-known run-ins with the law, including his arrest in Santaquin on an outstanding domestic assault warrant months before his passing in 2010. He was booked into the Utah County Jail and released the next day.

The “Silver Spoons” star also fought numerous health battles. He was born with a congenital kidney defect. The late star underwent a transplant at the age of 5. However, by 17, his body had “absorbed” the sole kidney he had received. In addition to his physical health, he also struggled with his mental health.

Coleman died on May 28, 2010, from a brain hemorrhage. He had suffered a fall at his home, which led to the hemorrhage and ultimately his death.

“GARY” is streaming on Peacock.
