SMH: Lil Yachty Admits He Can’t Name Five Tupac or Biggie Songs
What’s worse, forgetting the words to a Notorious B.I.G. song on stage in front of thousands of people, or not even being able to name a song in the first place?
Between Rich Homie Quan’s lyrical misstep earlier this summer and Lil Yachty’s recent confession, he can’t name five Biggie or Tupac songs, today’s Golden Era hip-hop purists have a little bit of a right to be concerned about the future of the beloved genre.
Lil Yachty recently revealed during an interview with Billboard that he “honestly couldn’t name five songs” from the legendary rappers, and isn’t losing sleep over that fact, either.
“But if I’m doing this my way and making all this money,” Yachty adds. “Why should I do it how everybody says it’s supposed to be done?”
(This is the part where you’re allowed to cringe.)
While this news does come off as a bit shocking to those deeply invested in preserving hip-hop’s history, Lil Yachty represents a new era of rappers who simply don’t care to do their homework. The 19-year-old claims that his influences come from the likes of Lil B, Kid Cudi and Soulja Boy. Fair enough.
Considering this is the same rapper who also recently shared that listening to “serious rap puts him to sleep,” the fact he can’t name five songs by Tupac or Biggie doesn’t come off as too much of a surprise.
Hey, at least he’s honest, right?
