In the world of music, samples and collaborations are always tricky. They sound great when done properly but can cause much grieve when not. So was the case with the Black Eyed Peas hit song “My Humps” off the 2005 multi-platinum album Monkey Business.

According to Yahoo! News, a Cleveland, Ohio DJ and former rapper named Orrin Lynn Tolliver, Jr. has been fighting for a decade with a former friend for using a sample of a track that eventually found it’s way to Will.i.am’s studio.

Although Tolliver was supposed to have received 75% of royalties as songwriter for anything pertaining to his 1983 song “I Need a Freak,” his ex-partner and friend James McCant’s had other ideas. McCant actually used the song in a 2000 compilation. After many years of going back and forth, Tolliver is finally getting paid for the Black Eyed Peas’s misuse of the single, winning $800,000 in profits and over $360,000 for his copyright infringement. This is great news for any artist afraid of being ripped off by the music industry.
