Apollo Theater to Honor Blues Legend Billie Holiday
In celebration of iconic blues musician Billie Holiday's 100th birthday, the Apollo Theater is planning a set of events in her honor.
According to the Associated Press, Holiday, who was born on April 17, 1915, will be honored in a series of events with one of the most exciting being her induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which will take place the day before her birthday.
In true Apollo fashion, a special concert will be held on April 10 in Holiday's honor with two-time Grammy winner Cassandra Wilson performing some of her songs. In conjunction with the performance, Wilson will also release a new album called Coming Forth by Day, which will include original interpretations of 11 recorded songs by the "Strange Fruit" songstress.
The Apollo Theater is also collaborating with Absolutely Live Entertainment and Sony's Legacy Recordings on several other events.
Billie Holiday, who died in 1959 at the age of 44, was immortalized on film in 1972 when the biopic Lady Sings the Blues chronicling her life was made.
