Lauryn Hill Shares Longer Video Clip Explaining Her Often Tardiness For Shows Noting ‘Context Is Key’
Lauryn Hill created some controversy recently when she told her fans that they should be “lucky” she makes it to the “stage every night.” The hip-hop legend is famous for being late or not showing up to her shows in the past, so the comment rubbed many in the culture the wrong way.
But now, Hill is saying that the viral clip relaying her comments wasn’t the whole story and is attempting to provide more context. Taking to her Instagram on Sunday (November 12), the Fugees member posted a longer video starting with her professing her love to her mother, whom she thanked for helping raise her children while she tours the world.
By the time the comments that stirred controversy began, Hill’s frustration could be perceived more toward the industry for its poor treatment of her than her fans.
Lauryn Hill Responds To Criticism Over Being Late To Her Shows
In a poignant email to BET from Hill’s publicist, Kathryn Frazier, she adds that her client’s message was supposed to be a beautiful tribute to her family rather than a slight at her fans.
“Context is everything and that clip being posted on social media without the full picture had a very different message than what was really said,” she wrote in part. “What people saw was not her addressing a late issue but instead a very moving tribute to her mother. I sobbed when I watched the whole thing! The online social media trolls took something loving and turned it negative for those clicks.”
Lauryn Hill originally made the viral comments during her Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour stop in Los Angeles, California, on November 4 at the Crypto.com Arena. View the full clip she posted below.
