Kyren Lacy Dies at 24, Days Before Facing Charges in Fatal Car Wreck

The former collegiate wide receiver’s unexpected death has raised new questions around a pending criminal case.

Kyren Lacy, a former LSU wide receiver and 2025 NFL Draft hopeful, died by apparent suicide on April 12, 2025, in Houston, Texas. His death occurred just two days before a scheduled grand jury hearing related to a fatal car crash in December 2024 that resulted in the death of 78-year-old Herman Hall.

Authorities reported that Lacy was involved in a police pursuit following a domestic disturbance call. During the chase, he crashed his vehicle and was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Units conducted an investigation of the incident," a statement says, via FOX 26 Houston. "Preliminary information indicates Lacy shot himself during the pursuit and prior to the vehicle crashing. A handgun was recovered from the interior of the vehicle. A review of the Pct. 4 units body camera and in car dash mounted video did not indicate any shots were fired after the pursuit ended."

Lacy had been facing charges of negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run, and reckless operation of a vehicle after allegedly causing the December crash and fleeing the scene.

“We’re saddened to learn of the tragic passing of former LSU football student-athlete Kyren Lacy,” LSU said in a statement, according to CBS News. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones, as well as his former teammates and coaches impacted by his passing.”

In the 2024 season, Lacy led LSU with nine touchdown receptions and recorded 58 catches for 866 yards. His death has prompted discussions on mental health, with his father urging parents to engage in open conversations with their children and to be vigilant about signs of distress.

“Our lives have changed forever and this will never be ok, but God needed my baby more than he was needed here” Kenny Lacy, Kyren’s father said in a social media post. “This has to be the biggest pill our families have had to swallow but I know the love and compassion in our families will get us through. This will never get easier, but we’ll learn to live with it.

He continued: “Check on your kids’ mental {state}. ”
